Villas and Apartments:
Villa and apartment holidays can offer great opportunities for
the disabled traveller. Over the 20 years or so accessible
accommodation has become more mainstream but finding a place to
stay that will fulfil all your needs has always been difficult.
That is why a large number of disabled people have had their own
private villas or apartments built to very high standards.
These are then often available to rent by other people
throughout the year. Their are a lot of apartments around
the big USA attractions like Disney etc. and many more in the
worlds top holiday hotspots. Where do I find them? Is what
you are probably asking right now. Well that depends on where you live.
Get hold of the publications issued about your disability or
general disability papers / magazines and you will see lots of
villas and apartments
advertised there. Invariably these properties are purpose
built for the disabled traveller. You might have to book
up to a year in advance if it's a popular place. If you
have a high level spinal injury and you know the villa you are
going to is owned by someone with a similar disability you'll
also know that the rooms and any equipment there will be ok for
you too. A lot of this type of holiday accommodation is
designed by the disabled owners before it is built. So
it's not uncommon to find air conditioning, completely level
single floor accommodation and pools with an electric pool hoist
too. A lot of the villa owners have their own villa
websites where you can see good pictures of the villa, its rooms
and surroundings. They will make using their property as
easy as possible too. They can tell you the best flights
and normally arrange accessible transport to and from the
airport for you as well.
