I recently switched providers am now with SKY broadband and so far very pleased with it, I live about 4km from my phone exchange so this speed result below is about the maximum my line will go right now If you want to run the test yourself click on the image then follow the instructions, on the results page you can then post the code to the image into a reply here like I've done so it shows on forum Andy

Hi Andy, Long time no speak:-) Hope you are well. Funny enough on this subject since the Gadget Show on Ch 5 raised it I've been checking mine using their tester as well as BT's & SpeedNets. I found my profile to be 'throttled' by BT (they use traffic monitoring/shaping software) & as I only live 100 yards from our exchange I know it works faster than they set it at (current result below too) though being greedy I know it can work even faster due to the initial tests we ran when I first got 8mb/s, so after complaining (took two weeks to sort) I got my profile reset but it could be faster. You also may have heard that BT are gonna start upgrading a lot of exchanges this year to 21CN so depending on where you live you might get 24mb/s but of course we need it coz the more these ISP's sell added stuff like digital TV/recording blah (like BT) then it chokes & slows the network. Also on this subject I'm thinking of moving to Sky this year as I pay a fortune for the full package/multiroom blah so could get broadband for free or much cheaper rather than pay on top to BT so I'm curious how easy it was to transition over e.g. MAC code generation & seamless migration, so any comments/views would be useful as I can't really be without for days/weeks if it's not really easy/smooth. On the subject of speed I'm spoiled over here in the UK as we've got 'up to' an 8mb/s line whereas in our Spanish house (going on Wednesday for 3 months) we have a radio dish on the side of the house which can supply 512kb/s & that's if the weather isn't bad

great site for all things broadband --> www.samknows.comre transition to sky, I was only without service for about 1 minute, you have to use their wireless netgear router as your login details are stored in it, its fairly straightforward to setup and being so close to exchange u should be able to get the top up to 16mbs max service too check sky service is available at your exchange ...... order from sky ..... get mac code from bt, they are valid for 30 days so this concides with telling them you are leaving, I also took up skys phone service too and now everythings included in one bill ..... Sky I have family pack ..... so all channels no sports/films £26 mid up to 8mbs broadband ...... £5 24/7 free calls except 08 and 09 numbers £5 still pay bt for line rental @ £10 a month Andy

Yeah good question Simon as I'd need that. Also I don't suppose you know if they support VPN tunneling? though I expect it would work. Also I don't really want to use their wireless router as I already have a mega (pre-n) setup. As long as I know the login details I can reprogram what I have (I've done it before for relatives that changed over) I might be interested in the phone package but what is the tied in contract e.g. 12 months or more? (I know I could look it up) As for being so close I've been down this road before & coz we're in the sticks the max is 8mb/s whereas a friend of mine lives in a town & he gets LLU so for that speed etc it's a tenner a month less, so that's the downside of living in the sticks there is no LLU etc where the ISP etc installs their own equipment in BT exchanges & potentially the full speed if close, but we're not in a cost justifiable area for anything other than the bog standard 'in the sticks' offering. I'd be interested though in saving 20 quid a month as I do have the full Sky+ package (Movies/Sports/Multiroom etc) & pay BT on top so I reckon I could bundle most of it in & save £15-£20 a month. Though the broadband element is still half what I pay in Spain for 512kB

re email ..... they give you email addys, which I don't use, their email setup is 'googlemail' rebranded, no download limits and full smtp sending, pop3 access too from most email programs. Gaz before doing anything I'd doublecheck you can use your own wireless router etc, I tried just putting my 'sky' login details into my belkin router and it didn't connect ...... forums here are pretty useful http://www.skyuser.co.uk/

I changed to O2 in the summer on the idea that they were switching to LLU 20Mb service shortly. Finally a few weeks ago it changed over and we are no longer sluggish. I used Pingtest too to check the quality http://www.pingtest.net/. Here's the results I am quite happy for just under £10 per month as I have an O2 mobile I get a discount.

Andy, IMPORTANT Google Chgrome browser ios flagging this site as potentially dangerous and trying to restrict access. I suggest you get hold of Google Chrome and check it out. You may have to contact Google to get them to change the dangerous sites list. Internet Well, I am in a town of only 13,000 or so people though boosted by students and we have only one choice of LLU service about 8Mb - O2 / Be There ( https://www.bethere.co.uk ). It might be worth a check there or at www.o2.co.uk . ALternatively, check out http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ where there is up to date info on what companies are doing and offering so you can see if anything is coming to your area.

hi again wheels,
I've just installed chrome and can't get it to replicate any warning messages to me, it goes to all parts of my site and forums without a problem.
If you increased the browsers security settings it may flag up because the site issues 'cookies' I can't think of anything else that may cause it.
Is it possible you can give me a little more info
cheers
Andy

Andy,
I found the following in your forum html:
<body><div style="display:none"><!--641846703--> .... (Edited to remove links)
Needless to say, that shouldn't be there!

Check your global javascripts as well for code which shouldn't be there.

A quick way to see what's happening, is to turn off Style Sheets in the page view on your browser.
You will then see the hidden links.
Looks like the hack is targeted to SMF forums.
Regards
Simon.
