have you tried contacting your local wheelchair services?  you should be able to get 1 for free off the NHS.

If you're not from Manchester, they should be able to give you a number of appropriate for your area.
Also, every five years, you are entitled to a grant from the government to pay for wheelchair, not sure how much it is. 1200 I think.
