Hi everybody.

Here's a question for you all.  Nico had a check up last week and his main concern was that his body is bending banana shaped.  When he's laid flat in bed his hips and legs veer off to the right.  His consultant said it's because so many musles were damaged on his right side and therefore are not tight enough to keep his body straight.  Nico's worry is that this is getting worse and worse and he's scared of it getting so bad it will start interfering with sitting in his chair etc.  It already interfers with his sleep because he can only lay comforably in one possition.  I've offered to get some fury ankle cuffs to hold him in bed but he didn't seem too keen?!?!?!

Have any of you suffered anything like this or know of any solution?  Many thanks.

Cat

I am not going to be much help here. However, FES (functional electrical stimulation) can sometimes help with muscle wasting. If I can find out anymore about this I will post you. I shall certainly try.

Meantime, get a good mattress - Tempur is good - that wasy Nico should be able to sleep all night on his stomach if he can do it. I tend to do that. I gave up turning every 2-3 hours. Now, it is my stomach or on my side and I can get through the whole night nae bother!

all I can suggest is to bend him back the other way!!! Lol! Well....lots of stretches anyway. I guess though that that is hard to do when its the trunk of your body. You could add a rope and pulley to those furry handcuffs!!Lol!

Bonus!!!....If he sleeps on his stomach he will probably snore less!!

Was this banana shape called a scoliosis by any chance?

I have had numerous operations on my spine to try and correct my 65+ degree angle but I wouldnt personally suggest going down this route, unless it is the only option left. I now wear a sexy denim spinal brace.

What I would suggest is that when sitting try and get the OT to get a cushion with lateral supports to prevent him from leaning too much. Vicair have a good system as does the J2 range.

Other than that maybe a referral to an orthotist to get some kind of spinal bracing sorted out.
