Hi folks,

Happy New Year to all of you. Can anybody give me an idea of how much a portable hoist might cost.  My son is looking for one in order that he might be able to go away for a weekend or holiday with his girlfriend or even stay with her overnight.  He is talking about one that would fold up and have its own carry case or one that would fit into a suitcase.  We are in the Republic of Ireland.

Thanks.

Hi Lynne

The ones I have seen on the internet are in excess of £1,000 + VAT.

I have a colleague in USA who goes away with her hubby and uses a portable hoist. I shall email her and see if I can find something similar in UK.

Lynne

Try this http://www.molift.com/uk/index.htm

They are based in Manchester, England and may be able to help you.

I read about them in one of my medical journals. A Norwegian Company with a great reputation.

Thanks Gary I will have a  look at that site and see what comes up.  There is one here in Republic of Ireland but it is nearly three thousand euro! I am sure they are cheaper than that. If he bought that he would be able to claim some VAT back on it.

Regards.

Hi Lynne,

I'm Irish and live in Belgiul and my partner is C6/C7, we don't have a hoist for him as we just use transfer planks. However we hope to have a hoist fitted in the bathroom soon for him.

I can hardly believe that mobile ones are so expensive - surely that cannot be right. But I have noticed that to be disabled means you also have to have considerable wealth !!!
The market is a seller's one I'm afraid!!!

Good luck with finding  it.

Hi all,

David managed to get a portable hoist on trial from Mobilift - but he was quoted 4,800 euro (to include carry case, which was 800 euro). We were absolutely gobsmacked with that price.  However, I did find one on the internet, a uk based company called Active Mobility Centre Ltd.  They have a really great web site. They are really helpful and if you e-mail them they come back to you straight away, unlike some other companies who obviously do not look after their customers!!  The price with carrying bags and shipping came to about 2,500 euro so all in all quite a good price, so it is on the way and hopefully he now can go away for a week end to a nice hotel, etc. Thanks to all who replied.

Hi Lynne
I live in Northern Ireland and we bought a portable hoist from a company in the South last year.  It cost £2309.  It is light(ish) and folds up for transport and storage.  My daughter (who is 11 now) loves it as the sling has long loops and she is in a sitting position when being transported.  We took it with us when we went to Paris last year and use it if we are going out for the day as Phoebe is C1-3 and needs physio and toileting.  The company are very nice and will come out to your house to assess your needs.  Here are their details

Meditec Medical Ltd
Unit 28 Whitestown Drive
Whitestown Industrial Estate
Tallaght
Dublin 24

Phone: 00353 1 4624045
Fax:     00353 1 4525104

Hope this is of some use.  If you would like to venture North to see it in action please email me and we can arrange a time.

Hi Jane,

Thanks so much for your kind offer.  This is the company in Tallaght that we got the Mobilift on trial from which was so expensive. They never mentioned another one.  The other hoist and sling arrived from Active Mobility and it seems to be what we were looking for, it cost £2,162 including shipping which is not bad.

Regards.

Hi Jane (again)

Sorry the name of the hoist we got on trial from Meditec was the Molift Smart , this was the one that was expensive. It was €4,000 plus €800 for the case, (way too much). We were told that we would get €800 back in VAT (the VAT rate here is now 21.5%), it's no wonder so many people are going northwards to do their shopping! Is that the one you have?
