Hi
I am a C6 tetra. My primary nurse has strongly recommended I consider a colostomy. Does anyone out there have any thoughts on this?

Hi,
My son is a T-5 paraplegic. He finally decided to go have a colostomy in March and it was the best decision he could have made. For me, it is easy to empty and keep him clean. No turning him to clean his bottom every time he goes. For him, the peace of mind that when he goes someplace he does not have to worry about an accident. It is also easy for him to empty and clean himself. Not to mention since David came home from the hospital and rehab with huge bed sores that were always a worry when he got stool in and on them. Much better this way.

I agree with Davies Mom, I havent any personal experience with colostomies but as Im a caregiver I have cared for people with them. They are so easy to look after! Take the old bag off, a quick wipe around the stoma then pop the new bag on. Easy! The only problem I have come across is if a bit around the edge isnt stuck down properly they can leak especially if they are full at the time.... not pleasant! Lol! I can see how much easier they would make life for someone with a spinal injury though. It would make a huge difference I would imagine.
