in my experience theres two types, both ultimately have the same goal which is to add links to their own or websites they are trying to promote, generally speaking the more external sites that link back to a website will increase their search rankings.

some spammers just join and post loads of links which are always irrelevant to the site, others like 'Salina' join trying to look like normal members but add links to the sites they are promoting in their 'signature' ie the text that goes under each post, ech morning I check and delete where necessary, but they sometimes fool me too
