Hi everybody,

As I have explained in previous posts, I am a T3 paraplegic and have recently had terrible bouts of trapped wind that I find difficult to shift or can't shift at all.

Does anybody know of any sure fire effective remedies or medication to ease trapped wind for a paraplegic?  Embarrassed

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Chris,

A bit tricky. Clearly some foods are known to cause this, and can be taken in reduced quantities, or eliminated.
The usual pressure lifts can help, if you are able to do them. I believe it's possible to take absorbent charcoal pills also. The latter should be discussed with your doc.

Hi Chris,  Its been a while since I have looked into this forum so you may not recognise my name.   Of course, I would agree that its probably best to consult with whoever is looking after you on a day to day basis, but it occurred to me to pass on a tip I learned when I had a hysterectomy.   Trapped wind after a hysterectomy is a common problem and some suffer from it worse than others, but, the tip we were given was charcoal in tablet form.  You might need to talk with someone who knows all about your SCI issues and perhaps mention what I have said, in case it is something that could help you.  I hope it is.

It has been suggested for me that I have a colostomy and this is why I have landed here again because from what I have seen the problems I face with having to digitally evacuate and put up with muscular dysfunction looks to me to be of a comparable nature.

Hi Janet,

I'm Chris, who added a reply to another Chris! I think you replied to the wrong one!

I note you're thinking about having a colostomy. The op now is almost routine, and, if needed it can be reversed. I'm with you all way about digital bowel care; it's not pleasant. Have your doctors mentioned Peristeen colonic irrigation? This is a much more efficient way of managing the bowel, and leads to much fewer, if any, accidents.
