Ski Kart A
Ski Kart is an amazing piece of equipment enabling those with
the most severe disabilities to ski. Most quadriplegics
with some arm function will be able to ski these karts
independently. You sit in a moulded body hugging
fibreglass shell connected by a metal chassis and suspension to
four skis. The karts don't require balancing or outriggers
and are completely stable at rest. Two levers at waist
level are pushed or pulled to turn the two front ski's on the
ski kart. If you don't have great grip then there's a
variety of different levers to choose from ands specially
adapted gloves to keep your hand on the levers. When
learning to ski these karts they can be controlled by a ski
instructor using a tether rope attached to the rear. The Karts
cannot use chair lifts and use the button lifts instead.
Sweden leads the way in the use of these karts at their ski
school in Are. I have skied these karts for the last 3 ski
seasons in Sweden and photos/videos and information about my
trips can be found here
